1. Introductions
In this article we expand on our previous blog post article – How to Make Shower Curtains A Decor Statement – with the intent to share and amplify on the perspective previously provided. We thought it might be useful to focus exclusively on some key decor considerations which were not detailed in the previous article.
The ideas expressed herein is rooted in the application of our two core decor principles – “concept” and “scale” explained in previous blog post.
2. Shower Curtains as a Decor Statement
From an interior design perspective every item in a room plays a central role and has the potential to influence the overall aesthetics of a room.
The principle is equally applicable in bathrooms and showers and given that the shower curtain is a prominent feature of that space it is therefore important to treat it as a focal point within the space.
Shower curtains can dramatically alter the bathroom decorations and ambiance, transforming it into an oasis and sanctuary which is both functional and an aesthetic expression of style and personal expression.
3. Understanding the Impact of Shower Curtains
Apart from window curtains, shower curtains is the largest display of textile in one’s home so every effort should be made to maximize the visual appeal of the space they occupy.
Shower curtains are always fully displayed and never folded or hidden – they are visual expressions written on canvas, offering an unmistakable opportunity for impact on the overall home decor.
The fundamental purpose of shower curtains is to act as a barrier however from a décor perspective they are designed to look and feel like fabric, offering the best of both worlds.
4. Shower Curtains Scale and Dimensions: Size Matters
Although most shower curtains come in standard sizes not all bathrooms are design to these specifications and would need to be custom made to suit. Curtains that are too short detract from the décor of the space and reflects a sense of a poor planned design result.
Always ensure that the curtain is wide enough to extend fully without stretching but long enough to brush the floor for a couple inches or at least fall just above to create a focal tailored look attuned to the space.
Curtains require 1 ½ to 2 ½ times fullness depending on the desired look. We recommend that you use 2 to 2 ½ times the width of the shower.
5. Shower Curtains – Understanding the Impact of Color and Pattern
The choice of color and pattern are central to the décor expression and can either make or break the visual capture of the bathroom design and space. Bold colors and large prints can turn a plain bathroom into a vibrant, energetic space, instantly drawing the eye of those who venture into the space.
Conversely, soft pastels and minimalist designs can create a soothing retreat.
Tips to guide your design choices:
Color psychology plays a role in setting the mood, feelings, and appeal – induces calmness, warmth, energy and belonging.
You should decide what ambiance you wish to create then choose accordingly.
When selecting a color or pattern, consider the existing color scheme of your bathroom and decide whether you want the shower curtain to complement the space or to stand out as an accent piece in which case it would draw a significant contrast.
Both approaches are equally useful, however a few guiderails can help you with your decision.
6. Shower Curtains– Use of Bold Colored Curtains
A bright or unexpected color can turn a shower curtain into a piece of art. Consider a shade that contrasts with your bathroom tiles or with the wall color which is most prominent. This will foster a pop of interest and vividness.
Tips to guide your design choices:
Curtains With Large Patterns
Big, bold patterns can turn a shower curtain into a statement piece. Think oversized florals, geometric shapes, or abstract prints that draw the eye and start a conversation.
Accentuating Minimalist Bathrooms
Minimalist, modern clean lines with monochromatic or a neutral color scheme would blend perfectly with a shower curtain with big bold patterns since it can inject a feeling of vibrant energy into the space. The bold pattern adds depth and personality the tone neutral minimalist bathroom.
Creating a Focal Point
If the bathroom lacks design, architectural features or any other defining elements of interesting décor then a bold patterned shower curtain could serve as the eye-catching anchor or focal point.
Enhancing Thematic Decor
For a bathroom with a specific theme, such as tropical or avant-garde, an oversized pattern on the shower curtain can reinforce the chosen motif effectively, tying in the various elements of the room.
Maximizing Small Spaces
Contrary to what is popularly believed, a large popping pattern could make a small space feel larger by drawing attention away from the limited square footage and towards the art-like design of the curtain. However, there is a caveat.
This works best when there is ample light into the bathroom. If the space is small and dark, a large popping pattern or print may do the direct opposite – requiring a lighter color curtain as apposed to one with popping colors.
7. Shower Curtains Thematic Designs
A curtain as a décor statement can carry a theme such as beach, forest, or cityscape which in an instant transposes ones thought to those spaces once it becomes visible – as such it establishes a Thematic Expression for the bathroom.
In this way the curtain serves two distinct purposes – first it complements the décor aesthetics of the bathroom and secondly, serves as a transformative motif that enhances and establishes a particular mental space.
Tips to guide your design choices:
Establishing Ambience
If you aim to create a specific mood or atmosphere in your bathroom, a thematic shower curtain can help reinforce a mood or feel – nautical, botanical, geometric, etc. A beach-themed can evoke a serene, vacation-like feel, while a forest scene will impart a quiet tranquil nature centered and inspired retreat.
Small Space Storytelling
Within a smaller bathroom a thematic curtain helps sell or create a story or illusion of space – a cityscape can create a sense of urban living with an expansive horizon.
Coordinating with Existing Decor
In a case where your bathroom features elements of a particular theme, through the architectural and décor elements a shower curtain could serve to unify and/or enhance the mood, feel and integration of the space. For instance, a nautical-themed with shell motifs and sandy hues could be completed with a beachy curtain.
Children’s Bathrooms
Thematic shower curtains are particularly effective in children’s bathrooms, creating a fun, energize, and engaging space. A forest or jungle pattern, for example, can turn bath time into an adventure.
Seasonal Updates
One of the key aspects of curtains in bathrooms is its versatility to changing seasons or for a holiday – from winter to summer, and for specific holidays e.g., Christmas, Halloween, Floral Patterns, etc.
8. Shower Curtains – Play With Texture
A curtain with texture adds a layer of interest and sophistication. Ruffles, pleats, or jacquard weaves can introduce a tactile dimension. Therefore, choosing the right shower curtain showcases the tactile qualities and textural features and how it adds to mood, feel and visual appeal.
A waffle-weave shower curtain can introduce a cozy, tactile element, while a smooth, crisp fabric can give off a clean, modern vibe. Embroidered details or appliqué can also serve to create a more refined and bespoke feel.
Tips to guide your design choices:
Enhancing a Monochromatic Scheme
If the bathroom has a neutral or monochromatic color scheme the textural enhancements provided by the curtain is key to uplifting the energy, mood and visuals of the space. A textured shower curtain in such a case breaks up the uniformity or monotony without straying to far away from the design style preferences and the chosen hue.
Adding Visual Weight
A heavier textured curtain can add visual weight and grounding in an airy spacy bathroom such that the bathroom feels more balanced and inviting.
Luxury and Spa-Like Vibes
The right texture can induce, spa-like bathroom mood and feel. It provides a sensory experience that enhances the feeling of indulgence, relaxation, and comfort, much like what one would expect from a luxury spa retreat.
Small Bathrooms Needing Depth
In small or particularly plain bathrooms, textural depths of a shower curtain adds interest and intrigue, drawing the eye in and providing a establishes the focal point that makes the space seem larger and more thoughtfully designed.
Softening Modern Spaces
Modern bathrooms with lots of hard surfaces, clean lines, and neutral tones can sometimes infer coldness and seem unwelcoming. A cotton-based shower curtain with a soft texture can introduce warmth and softness to balance out the hardness of tiles, metal fixtures and straight edges.
Playing with Light and Shadow
In bathrooms with lots of natural light, a textured curtain can create an interplay of light and shadows that adds dynamism to the space. As light filters through or plays across the texture, it can cast intricate shadows and create an ever-changing decor elegance.
Complementing Other Textiles
Introducing other textiles in the bathroom, such as towels or bathmats, etc., can complement and harmonize the space.
Masking Water Spots and Fingerprints: Textured shower curtains are forgiving of water spots, soap scum, or fingerprints, making them practical for high-use or a guest bathroom.
Seasonal Decor Changes: The texture can also reflect seasonal changes — thicker textures like velvets for winter can make the space feel warmer, while light linen textures are perfect for summer, giving a cooler, more breathable feel.
Creating a Statement Piece: Much like bold patterns, a curtain with a unique texture can be a statement piece in a bathroom that otherwise lacks standout design features.
9. Material Matters
The material from which the shower curtain is made determines its functionality, durability, and ability to act as a decor statement. Materials such as cotton or linen imparts a luxurious and organic feel to the space, while synthetic curtains made from vinyl and polyester are versatile but can be printed with vivid designs and seem more functional than decorative.
Tips to guide your design choices:
To introduce a sense of glamour, consider materials with a sheen, like satin or silk – keeping in mind that fabric curtains require liners to ensure it performs as a water barrier. These fabrics offer a level of sophistication that’s unmatched.
Look for machine-washable fabrics that resist mold and mildew. Detachable liners are a bonus, allowing for easy washing and replacement.
10. Layering and Accessories
Although not often used, a double rod can also be utilized for shower curtains and allows for the use of an attractive outer curtain and a functional inner curtain or liner.
This setup not only adds a dimensional look but also allows for the interplay of textures and colors. A possible decor approach can be a transparent or solid liner paired with a decorative main curtain.
The liner does not have to be plain, but can also be decorative thus adding to the statement. A curtain as a décor statement doesn’t stand alone – hooks, rods, fixtures, towels, mats, and art and other décor accents all come together to unify the bathroom space.
Tips to guide your design choices:
Hooks: Trade plastic rings for polished more chic metal hooks or unique designs that match the curtain’s character. Opt for hooks with decorative motifs, elegant finishes like brushed nickel or brass, or even unique shapes to add character.
These small details may seem inconsequential, but they can subtly enhance the overall decor.
Rods: A high-quality shower curtain rod in a finish that complements your fixtures adds to the curated feel.
Towels and Mats: Coordinate towels and bathmats with the shower curtain. These need not have to match exactly but should work within the same color palette or theme.
Art and Decor: Hang artwork or place decor items that echo a color or motif from the shower curtain to unify the bathroom’s design.
11. The shower – the full view
Remember that a shower curtain is viewed both from the inside and the outside of the tub. Choose a curtain that is visually pleasing from all angles, perhaps with a reversible design or one that has detailing on both sides. This way, the decor statement remains consistent, regardless of the vantage point from which the shower curtain is viewed.
The question now becomes should a curtain remain fully closed or partially closed when not in use. The right answer is, it should be left at least half drawn but never fully closed make a statement otherwise it is seen as hiding what is contained within the shower.
As such it is important that the shower and fixtures play supporting roles in the overall decor and aesthetics of the bathroom.

12. Consider the Lighting
The way light interacts with your shower curtain can affect its appearance and the ambiance it creates. If your bathroom gets plenty of natural light, a sheer curtain can diffuse it beautifully, casting soft shadows and creating a warm glow.
For bathrooms with artificial lighting, a glossy or metallic curtain can reflect light and add a dynamic quality to the space.
A beautifully designed shower curtain under harsh, unflattering light loses its allure. Opt for softer, layered lighting in the bathroom to enhance the colors and patterns of your curtain.
13. Making it Personal
For a truly unique statement, custom-designed shower curtains are the way to go. Work with a local artist or use online services that print custom designs to create a curtain that’s a one-of-a-kind piece of art.
It can set the tone, reflect your personality, and even serve as a piece of art. By considering color, pattern, material, and accessories, and by not being afraid to customize, you can turn an ordinary shower curtain into an extraordinary element of your bathroom’s design.
